Top 5 Ways I Use Social Media To Grow My Direct Sales Business
Social media. As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you either love it or hate it. The people who hate it see it as a waste of time – especially solopreneurs – and don’t want to spend precious time tied to a platform when they really want to be doing what they’re best at: meeting and serving clients. While those who love it have found a system for not only serving existing clients, but meeting new ones as well. While every business is different and every business owner has their preference, I can say without a doubt that using social media in my direct sales business has paid off and continues to do so.
Does social media take time? Of course it does! What I have found is, like every other new “tool”, it’s only as useful when I first understand its purpose and then put it to use to serve me and my team. Trust me, if it wasn’t working, I would have abandoned it years ago! I am happy to say, not only does using social media work for me, it also works for our team members. Our team has achieved Crown Diamond, an elite level in our company, not once but TWICE this year alone. I am not saying we only used social media, but I am saying social media has played a strategic role in our success. It keeps our momentum going, helps us cheer each other on and shows the world what we’re about all at the same time. When we use social media in our business, it allows us to take our businesses beyond the 4 walls of a party or a class and lets people see from REAL people how to live the lifestyle of wellness, purpose and abundance. That’s what my business is all about. If I can share that with as many people as possible, why wouldn’t I?
So how do you know if social media is right for you and your business?
As a business owner and leader of a direct sales team of over 6,000 members, here are ways that I have found time and a purpose for using social media.
1. I use Twitter to stay on top of news, company updates and connect with like-minded people.
At first Twitter made no sense to me because I wasn’t sure if I could connect with anyone who would be interested in my business. So reluctantly, I set up an account, started following a few people and before long, I got the hang of it. The most important lesson I learned about Twitter is that you don’t want to only use it to find new clients or new business. In fact, for me, the best reason to use Twitter would be to connect with peers and like-minded people who genuinely want to support me whether they purchase anything from me or not. So I use it to publicly show appreciation for the people I meet there, boast on my team members, and even keep up with news. Twitter is great for connecting with people in media too. Use it to follow and share news from your local media networks, and when you have an event or cause that is media worthy, Tweet them! You’ll be surprised what just a simple Retweet from an authority account on Twitter can do for your publicity. Just don’t overuse this strategy, and remember I said make sure what you want them to share is “media worthy”!
2. I use Facebook to keep in touch with our ever-growing team, meet new friends and stay connected to family.
If I had to choose a favorite social media platform for my business, it would be Facebook. Mainly because it’s easiest to use, which is proven by the fact that it is the largest social media platform of them all. Our direct sales team uses Facebook Groups to share member-only information as well as upcoming events. I also use Facebook to connect with new people through advertising and referrals. Now people don’t have to hunt for my phone number to call me or give to a friend. They just simply message me or tag me in a comment to reach me and right there on Facebook, I can share information about our company as well as enroll them as members!
My #1 rule for Facebook: Post often (at least 3 times/day) and be sure to respond to comments. And rule #2: Invest in advertising! Your business is stagnant unless you’re meeting new people!
3. I use Instagram to share inspirational images and introduce people to natural wellness lifestyle.
At first glance, you may think that the only thing people post on Instagram are photos of food or photos of their outfits. But when you look a little deeper, you’ll find it’s more about lifestyle than a one-time moment. You can learn a lot about a person’s life from their Instagram feed. I love Instagram because it is a great place to share my own photos of myself, my products and my faith. That’s exactly what it’s for – people all over the world want a place to be who they are and share what’s on their mind through self-made photos and videos. I happen to like that so I fit in on Instagram just fine, and I get to connect with people who are interested in learning more about me and my business.
4. I use my Blog to post informational and educational resources to help people on their wellness journey.
A cardinal rule for using social media for business is to Give First! Whether you’re giving free information, free samples of a product or free tips that can really help people, social media will work better for you if you approach it with the right perspective. The thing is, people aren’t going to buy anything from you until they get to know, like and trust you. That’s why I use my Blog and post regularly (at least once/week) helpful tips, recipes, event information, more information about our products, how-to information, and insights I gather along my own journey towards living healthier life. People who are looking for information and answers are starving for the truth and I use my blog as a tool to be there for people. And you know what? Out of all the social media platforms, your blog is the only one you OWN. If you don’t have a website that features a blog on a hosting account that you OWN and that allows you to post what you want, when you want, in whatever format you want and as many characters as you want, you are missing out on the best form of social media there is!
5. I use offline social media (live events, classes, workshops) to bring my social media full circle.
I would be kidding you if I told you the only form of social media I use is online. The truth is, I use social media online to back up and reinforce what I do off line. When I’m hosting live in-person events, speaking as a minister or holding an essential oils workshop, there’s something about being in the room with people that can’t be replaced. That’s why as much as I love connecting with people online, I will still continue to work my business by meeting people face-to-face. I have even been blessed to have people who have only met me online drive hours to see me or a guest I’m hosting in person just so they could be in the room!
