Summer Survival Kit with Natural Products

Summertime is almost here and in many areas, the sun can be quite brutal. Here are some essentials to keep on hand all summer long.

Summer Essential #1: Good Quality, Natural Sunscreen

A good quality SPF-based sunscreen is essential for maximum protection. In addition to wearing protective clothing, you’ll want to make sure you protect your skin with a good sunscreen. What you are looking for is a natural sunscreen product that has SPF (sun protection factor) to help shield our skin from UV/UVB rays of the sun. The amount of SPF will vary from product to product, and its effectiveness depends on several variables including how long a person is in the sun, the geographic location, time of day and weather.

Did You Know? All Skin Tones Need Sun Protection!

When it comes to sunburn, the sun is an equal opportunity offender! It doesn’t matter how light or how dark your skin is, too much sun is harmful to the skin. That’s why it’s important to apply some sort of protection to any exposed skin while you’re out in the sun, including your face, lips and hands. Do you commute to work in the sun? Sitting in the car makes you a target for prolonged sun exposure. Consider applying sunscreen to your hands and face before your commute. Wearing makeup? Use skincare products that contain natural sunscreen to help keep your skin protected throughout the day.

Choosing The Right Sunscreen

It may cost a little more, but it’s important to choose a quality sunscreen that is not full of chemicals. Companies like Environmental Working Group evaluate the ingredients and toxicity of sunscreen and other skin care products. You can check their latest list of 2015 sunscreens here. Choose good quality sunscreens with SPF of 30 or higher for face/skin care products and 60 or higher for beach or outdoor pool time.

Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen. The SPF of sunscreen lessens the longer you’re outside. Follow the instructions on the label for wear times so you know when to apply.

Essential Oils Tip: Some essential oils such as lavender (SPF 4-5), myrrh (SPF of 4-7), and carrot seed oil (SPF of about 35-40) are essential oils that can be blended with other natural products to help protect the skin from the sun; however, no essential oil on its own is as effective as a natural sunscreen that has been tested for SPF.

Summer Essential #2: Protective Clothing

Wear light colored and light weight fabrics to cover your arms and legs. Light weight hats with wide brims make great protection for your face and hair.

Summer Essential #3: A good pair of shades.

Shades go along way to keep the sun out of your eyes, but they can also keep out sand, pollen and other irritants.

Summer Essential #4: Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil helps soothe skin and is calming to help you relax.

Want to know the key to prevent sun burn? Limit sun exposure. If you don’t have to be outdoors in direct sunlight for long periods of time – don’t! Though the sun helps the body to naturally produce Vitamin D, we only need about 20 – 30 minutes of indirect sunlight to achieve those benefits. Sun damage, skin ulcers and sun spots are all dangers of too much sun exposure. Even with good sunscreen, your skin can burn. Know your limits and protect yourself.

Summer Essential #5: Natural Bug Spray or Insect Repellant

Keep the pesky bugs away this summer with a natural insect repellant that is also safe for kids. Look for products that are not filled with chemicals to provide your family with the best protection.
