What’s The Difference Between Fat Loss & Weight Loss

Believe it or not, fat loss is not the same thing as weight loss. Many people tend to rush into a weight loss journey going back and forth between fad diets, eating 1200 calories a day, and doing hours and hours of cardio. But do you know that you’re actually hurting the way that you look?

The difference between fat loss and weight loss all comes down to one word: Body Composition. I’ve had many friends come to me saying, “Shaen, I look skinny fat. I do cardio all the time, I eat nothing but salad, I’m even losing weight on the scale! But why don’t I look any more toned? Why do I still have flab?” Again, this is when our keyword Body Composition comes in.

What many people don’t understand is that just because you’re losing weight, doesn’t mean it’s all fat. When you aren’t properly nourishing your body enough and not doing resistance training, you’re most likely actually losing lots of muscle which is vital to looking lean and toned. And because muscle weighs more than fat, you can literally be 125lbs with prominent levels of body fat and little muscle, or still be 125lbs and look like a Victoria Secret model. It truly comes down to your muscle percentages compared to your body fat percentage.

So, what do I do differently?

1. Ditch the fad diets. Long, sustainable fat loss will only be possible with a true lifestyle change. So find a meal plan that you actually enjoy eating and stick to it. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, clean fats, and lean protein sources like chicken or fish.

2. Get in your protein. In order to get that toned body, you HAVE to be eating enough. Its recommended to eat 1g of protein for every. 7-1lb of your goal weight. So for example, if your goal was to weigh 140lbs, you’d need to be eating 98-140gs of protein (along with your fruits and vegetables) daily.

3. Resistance training. While cardio aids in fat loss, it can also really mess up your bodies muscle composition if you’re doing way too much of it. The more muscle you have on your body, the better your metabolism is, and the more of a fat you’ll lose. I always recommend about 30 minutes of resistance training/weight lifting, and 25-30 minutes of cardio 5-6 days a week for best results.

4. Stop weighing and start measuring. Stop driving yourself crazy with the number on the scale! Once again, your weight may only shift 5-10lbs for you to see a dramatic shift when it comes to true fat loss, so constantly beating yourself over a number only makes everything more stressful. Instead, start taking progress pictures and record your body measurements every few weeks.

In our world today so many things demand our attention. It can feel like we “don’t have time” or motivation to make the healthy changes we require. The truth is we have the power to make every health-full change our intuition brings our attention to. The KEY is to gradually make the change. The phrase “Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast” states it perfectly. Daily power walks are a simple way to enhance your fitness routine and own your power to manifest strength and health!

What is Power Walking?

Power walking is a style of walking performed at a steady energetic pace with exaggerated movement of the arms. It is highly recommended by thousands of doctors and hundreds of studies have shown its benefits. Speed walking is easier on your joints, since you hit the ground with less than half the force you do when you jog. So you’re less likely to experience burn out, soreness, or injury.

What Are The Health Benefits?

Improved Health

Incorporating regular exercise into your fitness regimen helps combat illness and disease. When done consistently, power walking can help balance cholesterol levels as well as decrease the likelihood of serious health issues.

“New research that took place at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, shows that exercise is perhaps the best way to keep the common cold at bay. Taking a moderately-paced walk for between 30 and 45 minutes daily was found to increase the amount of immune system cells that were present in the body. The levels of immunity boosters remained elevated for several hours after exercise and appear to have a cumulative effect in protecting against illnesses over time.” (source)

Healthy Weight and Enhanced Performance

Power walking improves body conditioning, which provides better endurance for carrying out daily tasks. It also uses both upper and lower body strength resulting in stronger muscles and bones. This leads to a greater ability to do challenging tasks like lifting heavy objects.

It isn’t necessary to spend any money on a gym membership or special equipment in order to get in great shape. In fact, walking at a brisk pace of about 4mph can burn up to 345 calories! When you combine power walks with healthy eating and lifestyle choices you can maintain a healthy weight with grace and ease.

Release Stress

One of the best ways to manage stress is to go “take a walk.” Even a 15 minute walk a day can help center your concentration and focus. It is a very effective way to release tension and have some alone time. The endorphins released in the brain during exercise encourage a calm, cool, and collected state of mind. Removing yourself form the hectic pace of daily life can help you feel renewed and refreshed.

Oxygenate Your Cells

The wonderful thing about power walks is it benefits body, mind, soul, and spirit! I once heard that the messages of heaven are carried upon the molecules of Oxygen. So the more fresh air we breathe the more clear those messages of divine inspiration are! The outdoors is FULL of Oxygen especially near bodies of water (or even a sea salt bath). Everything living is charged with the breath of God and being in nature can recharge every part of our beings.

Essential Oils For Power Walks

Young Living Essential Oils are a great addition to power walking and any fitness routine. They contain the highest known oxygenating molecules which transport nutrients to the cells of the body, as well as aid in the tissue’s disposal of toxic waste products.

Breathe Peppermint to wake up your senses before heading out for your walk. You can also on apply to sore and tired muscles pre or post workout to help soothe minor discomfort. Deep Relief is also a great choice.
